In the Deepest Ocean Trenches, Animals Eat Plastic

In the Deepest Ocean Trenches, Animals Eat Plastic | ECO EVOLUTION TODAY | Scoop.it
Alan Jamieson remembers seeing it for the first time: a small, black fiber floating in a tube of liquid. It resembled a hair, but when Jamieson examined it under a microscope, he realized that the fiber was clearly synthetic—a piece of plastic. And worryingly, his student Lauren Brooks had pulled it from the gut of a small crustacean living in one of the deepest parts of the ocean.
Al Cannistra's insight:

"The world produces an estimated 10 tons of plastic a second" - SCARY THOUGHT!

Baby sea turtles are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of plastic pollution, according to a new study which found around half of the recently hatched reptiles had stomachs full of plastic. In recent years, scientists have realised that animals ranging from plankton to whales are regularly consuming plastic, since around 10 million tons of it ends up in the sea
Al Cannistra's insight:

seems plastics are in the news daily - and not in a good way....  perhaps the call to stop production of "one-use" plastic needs to get louder....

7 smart swaps that will get you closer to a plastic-free life

7 smart swaps that will get you closer to a plastic-free life | ECO EVOLUTION TODAY | Scoop.it
But there's so much more disposable plastic out there, meaning we have a lot more work to do — and not a moment too soon. Our plastic problem is growing, and it's ending up literally everywhere, from inside the fish we eat to microplastics in the salt we use to flavor our food. At this point, we've created a geological layer that will be left behind for tens of thousands of years. If we all disappeared tomorrow, aliens could land 50,000 years from now and find a geological layer of plastic 50 years thick. So that's our legacy? A layer of plastic blanketing the Earth?
Al Cannistra's insight:

if we all dies tomorrow - 50,000 years from now......   they would still find PLASTIC! - that is a bothersome statement - perhaps time to correct the mistake....
