Gingko biloba trees guard a secret fountain of youth | ECO EVOLUTION TODAY | Scoop.it
Researchers wanted to know what gives these trees their longevity. They compared dozens of ginkgo trees ranging in age from 15 to 667 years old to see what helped them live so long. Their findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science.

"In humans, as we age, our immune system begins to start to not be so good," study coauthor Richard Dixon, a biologist at the University of North Texas, told The New York Times. But in a way, "the immune system in these trees, even though they're 1,000 years old, looks like that of a 20-year-old."

Most plastics in our recycling bins aren't getting recycled, new report finds | ECO EVOLUTION TODAY | Scoop.it
It's the latest chapter in the unravelling of the American recycling system, which started when China stopped accepting U.S. recycling in 2018.

"This survey confirms what many news reports have indicated since China restricted plastic waste imports two years ago — that recycling facilities across the country are not able to sort, sell, and reprocess much of the plastic that companies produce," Jan Dell, independent engineer and founder of The Last Beach Cleanup, who led the survey of plastics acceptance policies told Greenpeace in a news release on the subject.

Animals That May Be Extinct After the Australia Wildfires

Animals That May Be Extinct After the Australia Wildfires | ECO EVOLUTION TODAY | Scoop.it
Things were already looking grim for countless species on our planet. As the Center for Biological Diversity and other science-backed organizations have been pointing out for the last several years, Earth is undergoing the sixth mass extinction since life forms began developing on it an estimated 3.8 billion years ago, with 1,000 species now disappearing per year. But the latest spate of Australian bushfires, which as of this writing had consumed 15.6 million acres, according to the BBC, have significantly upped that ante. Some already-endangered animals are potentially gone forever and at risk of joining these 14 animals that have gone extinct over the past 100 years.
